A practical effects test designed as a method of bringing our Milky Way Galaxy to life along with various star clusters. By working to add saturation to renders of these cosmic wonders through Adobe Photoshop and illustrating what they might have looked like in their infancy, I utilized projection mapping to place these images onto polyester fiber fill in my own living room to create tangible depth to what would otherwise be a flat image.
As seen in the top row of images, I hand sculpted the polyester fiber fill to have the textured surface needed for the projection mapping to appear convincing after various lighting tests. I believe that a simple effect like this has vast potential to be expanded upon and used heavily in an environment that could allow visitors to walk among the galaxies instead of looking up at them in a traditional planetarium setting.
